Colorado River


Location:

The Colorado River is located in the southwest United States and starts high in the Rocky Mountains of Rocky Mountain National Park. In all it flows 2,333 km through the Colorado Plateau of western Colorado, southeast Utah, and western Arizona to the Gulf of California in northwest Mexico. In Arizona it flows along the borders of Nevada and California. The water from the Colorado river is shared with seven western states and Mexico, in all serving over 25 million people.

Name:

The Colorado River was formally named the Grand River. That name inspired others like Grand Lake, Grand Valley, Grand Junction, and Grand County.

Wildlife:

The Colorado River is home to fourteen native fish species, four of which are endangered and many others have rapidly shrinking populations. Other animals include: Beaver, Muskrat, Mink, River Otter, Moose, Duck, Canada Goose, Whooping Crane, Sandhill Crane, Piping Plover, Least Tern, Bald Eagle, Frog, Toads, Tiger Salamanders, Turtle, Snake, and Skinks.

When viewing wildlife the best times are early morning and early evening because wildlife is most active. You are not allowed to pet or feed wild animals in any Colorado State park.
